Locally known as Kongde Ri (6187m), it is the most prominent mountain in Lumding Mountain Range and is visible throughout the tail from Lukla to Tengboche in Everest Base Camp Trek. It is arguably the best trek for the panoramic view of Khumbu Valley and the surrounding mountains in Everest region. It is situated in the southwest section of LUKLA-NAMCHE Trek and feeds the Dudhkoshi River on the eastern side and Lumding River on the western side. Summiting Kongde peak is a mountaineering expedition but Kwangde Ri (Kwangde Peak) is a 6011m trekking peak.
In Khumbu region, Kwangde Peak (6,011m) is one of the most challenging peaks for climbing because of multi ridge climbing on the Eastern part of Lumding Mountain. It is considered as part of the Rolwaling mountain range and serves as a barrier between the Rolwaling and Khumbu. The peak is unseen at the Northern part up to the Lumding Drangka that stands at high and remote valley surrounded by the glaciers of Khartang (6853m/ 22484ft), Numbur (6959m/ 22831ft), Karyolung (6511m/21361ft). According to Nepal Mountaineering Association, this peak is considered as one of the most difficult trekking peak. Route is designed for steady climb allowing trekkers to acclimatize as the climb progresses. The top part demands experience and good physical condition.
This is a camping trek but for those seeking a bit of luxury in the mountain, there is a lodge called Kongde Lodge, situated at 4,250m. Besides this lodge, there is another lodge nearby called Sherpa Guide. Visitors will see five of the world’s highest mountains, Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, Cho-Oyo, Gyajung Khang (the highest under 8000m), and Ama Dablam from the vast pasture where the lodges are located. From the summit, visitors can get panoramic view extending from Rolwaling in the Northwest and Makalu in the east. Combined with views of the spectacular Khumbu valley and the Kongde Lake lets you sync in the purity of the Himalayas. The northern ridges are steep. Climbing is possible from the north but It is a technical peak. The large southern terrain of the mountain is still unexplored as its very challenging. After reaching Namche, the trail to Kongde base camp, situated at 4700m starts. The trek from Kongde base camp to summit is through the mix of challenging and complex terrain for which you will have to be with a well-trained alpine guide. Trekkers will walk through Glaciers and steep rocky faces.
